GASTRIC BY-PASS:
Type Y Roux Jejunal Gastric bypass

TYPE OF PROCEDURE MIXED  (Combines Restriction and Malabsorption)

DESCRIPTION:
Staples are used to create a small gastric pouch in the upper part of the stomach, which restricts the amount of food ingested. A part of the small intestine is restricted to delay the mixture of gastric juices in order to reduce the absorption of food.

RESULTS:
An average of 77% of excess weight is lost a year after the surgery. Studies show that after 10 to 14 years after, the patients maintained 60 % weight lost. Studies from the year 2000 in 500 patients showed that 96 % of certain associated health conditions improved or were solved, such as back pain, sleep disorders, blood pressure, diabetes type II and depression. In many cases, patients tell of a fast sensation of satiation combined with satisfaction, which reduces the anxiety to eat.

RISKS:
All surgeries are associated with certain level of risk.  The risks and the considerations mentioned here are specific for this procedure.

-Low absorption of iron and calcium
-Chronic anemia due to the lack of vitamin B12
-Possibility of Dumping Syndrome when ingesting sweets, highly caloric liquids or dairy products.
-Increase of gastric reservoir
-The isolated part of the stomach, duodenum and segments of the small intestine cannot be easily visualized by the use of X-rays or endoscopy.
